Report of the Commission of Inquiry into Housing

‘The Commission of Inquiry into Housing released its report and recommendations. This was a wide-ranging inquiry and the Commission made 114 recommendations. These included that:

  • Polynesians should be housed in very small, dispersed groups and that large concentrations should be avoided.
  • A more systematic and more positive approach be adopted for welfare services for Polynesians, especially in mass state housing areas; and that the Māori and Island Affairs Department assume prime responsibility for arranging the housing of Māori living in sub-standard conditions in the Bay of Islands, introducing transportable housing if necessary.[i]
