Social Security Amendment Act

Changes recommended in the Puao-Te-Ata-Tu report are embodied in this Act. Puao-Te-Ata-Tu recommended the government adopt a bicultural approach to policy formulation and incorporate the “values, cultures and beliefs” of Māori in the formulation of legislation, programmes, and services. It recommended specific amendments to both the Social Security Act 1964 and the Children and Young Persons Act 1974 that would better acknowledge Māori beliefs and cultural practices. The report also recommended that DSW share power and authority over the use of its resources.[i]
