Argues that the process of colonisation and the subsequent dispossession of Maori has greatly affected the psychological, social, political, and economic welfare of the whānau, which needs to be kept in mind when addressing the issue of family violence as contemporary Māori whānau have been shaped by these forces. It would therefore be ineffectual and inappropriate to address the problem from the dominant (European) cultural perspective.
